It sounds very doubtful that it is an antique, however there are a few things you can do to check.
Can you see any screws? Phillips head screws were used predominantly after 1930 so if you see those the piece is not that old. Can you tell if the piece has any composite wood like particle board or plywood? Plywood was used after 1940 so again that is another indicator the piece is not old.
You can also try finding a certified appraiser in the phone book to look at the item, or take a photo to a local antique shop.
