Decorate in Victorian Style
The Victorian Era of England was a period of elegance and artistic style. During this period, the country went through remarkable social, political, literary and religious reformations. This time period is named during the reign of Queen Victoria, which lasted from 1837 to 1901. Victorian style living was one of the most upheld fashions of all time. Most importantly, in modern days, Victorian interior designing has been given a striking significance. The Victorian era incorporated influences from many different cultures to develop decorative arts. What is notable about Victorian interior designing is that it gave priority toorder and excessive ornaments. There was aclear division between public and private spacein a home. The rooms were neatly divided into drawing room, parlour, kitchen quarters, and halls and so on. Sometimes a bedroom was separated into two by a door.
Victorian furniture were designed with styles from many periods including Gothic, Elizabethan, Tudor, Rocco and neo-classical. Gothic and Rocco designs were more popular. The culture during this period reflected proper manners and well-regulated lives. Thus, the characteristics of furniture were also grandeur and sophisticated. Furniture were elaborately carved, ornamented and generally had a dark finish. Chairs were upholstered, had large puffy cushions, and mostly regal looking. Wood was the main element of all furniture and metal was used only in small proportions. Dark wood with a reddish tint and deep brown hues was mostly used due to the gothic influences. Dark mahogany, black walnut, rosewood, bog oak, ash and maple were popular choices of wood.
Most furniture belonging to this period was large and intricately carved. The carvings were usually natural designs such as leaves, flowers and animals. These pieces have curves, angular lines, decorative friezes and curved mouldings. Upholstery usually had rich and textured material like velvet. The colours were usually dark. Almost all upholstered furniture had tassels, fringes and embellishments. Curved ‘serpentine’ seats, three seater sofas, pedestal games tables, console tables, wooden wine coolers, Kidney desks, side cabinets and sewing tables are some of the Victorian antique furniture to decorate our homes with. The significant classy look of this furniture made them popular outside England too. It spread to other European countries and even United States.
Ornamental glass work, vintage furniture and sterling silver are some other works of décor belonging to the Victorian era. Authentic Victorian furniture can give an appealing and a great value to a house. If you are an art lover, a collector or just 19th century fashionable, these furniture and home decors can transport you to an age that valued sophistication and style.
