Victorian furniture is any furniture made during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). There were many different styles of Victorian furniture and much of it very different. There was Gothic revival furniture, Rococo Revival furniture, Renaissance Revival furniture and Eastlake and Aesthetic movement, which was in the later years of Victoria’s reign. Many of the styles of Victorian furniture used dark woods such as mahogany and walnut, which made the pieces, seem very large and foreboding. Today however we can have the style of Victorian furniture in a light ivory finish that makes the pieces friendlier in our modern rooms.
The modern versions of Victorian furniture are designed to reflect all of the grandeur of the Victorian era but without the darkness and room dominant qualities. Don’t be afraid to mix and match your Victorian furniture with modern pieces as they can sit very well together. Plain pine goes very well with painted Victorian furniture and a few pieces of each in say a bedroom can create a beautiful effect with the added benefit of being able to buy pieces one at a time to add lightness and brightness to any room.
