My recently fitted Solid Oak floor is rising in places and creaking. Is this normal and will it go away?
It is a 18mm solid oak glued floating floor above 12mm plywood and a waterproof / thermal membrane covering a concrete floor. We left at least 12mm gap all round and “climatised” the flooring for at least 10 days prior to install. I’m wondering if we need to act now or wait to see if it settles. Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks.
Concrete contains a lot of water so when drying out the water has to go somewhere. Any absorbing material near the concrete will take in this moisture. The 12mm space you left between the flooring and the wall does not appear to be enough for the amount of water in the surrounding air. I suggest you heat the area starting at a low level and gradually increasing until desired room temperature. The walls if of traditional construction (brick or blocks) will add moisture. Plaster on walls will also add more moisture until all has dried out.
If your heating is up to room temperature and the surrounding materials has dried out then the only option you have is to remove the skirting (if fixed) and create a bigger space between the flooring and the wall. This may mean having to replace the skirting with a thicker one. Be careful not to create more space between flooring and walls if the flooring is holding moisture because when you turn up the heat the flooring may shrink back leaving a gap between flooring and skirting which would cause a draught resulting in increased heating bills.
Your local authority may have a moisture reading meter which would give an indication. Alternatively a better option is to ask your flooring supplier to come up with an answer but I think it would be wise to ask them what the moisture content should be in the flooring first and then having established this get them to measure the moisture content and show you the reading. If the moisture reading is within limits and you have kept to their fixing guidelines then it becomes their problem to sort out.
