Why do most sales people seem so reticent lately about helping potential customers?
I needed some new carpeting. To make sure whoever I dealt with had an idea about what I wanted, I brought the rug with me. When I arrived at the rug and flooring store, it was about 5 minutes before I even found a salesman. I explained what I wanted, but he couldn’t seem to grasp it. I told him I had a sample out in the car and if he followed me out, I would show it to him. I went to the car, opened the trunk and unrolled the rug. I was talking away, then paused. I didn’t hear him comment. I looked around and the salesman was nowhere in sight. Peeved, I entered the store again only to find him talking to other customers. I was so angry, I just left. Is it a common practice of sales people to leave one customer while they are talking to them and go to other customers?
Experienced sales people can quickly size up a potential buyer from those who are just looky-loos. He/she is not going to waste their time with customers that are just shopping around for the best price and not committed to a purchase. Also if the customer starts making unreasonable demands like going out into the parking lot. Many sales people are not permitted to leave the store during business hours. Who know what would happen once the salesman went out. He doesn’t know you. What if you pulled a weapon on him outside? Sales people also pick up on how the customer presents him/herself. Who would you rather talk to – a well-groomed person with nice clothes or an unkempt slob with ratty clothes? How did you present yourself?
