Remember when sex scandals were limited mostly to movie stars and politicians? The sports world continues to catch up, with France’s soccer team for the World Cup now engulfed in allegations of improper behavior.
Police in Paris are investigating whether France’s soccer superstar and two other players on the French team had sex with an underage girl who’s alleged to have been working for a suspected prostitution ring at a Paris night club.

The questions about Franck Ribery, Karim Benzema and Sidney Govou come as France awaits its World Cup team to be named, in about three weeks. Ribery is the unquestioned star of the French team, who in 2007 signed for about $30 million to play for the Bayern Munich team.
The AP reports no charges have been filed. Prostitution is legal in France, but clients are liable if the prostitute isn’t over 18 years old, the AP says, and offenders face up to three years in prison and a $60,000 fine.
The woman in question, Zahia Dehar, now 18, has told police she had underage sex with all three players, according to the Daily Telegraph. The English newspaper reported her saying she was “shocked” the players faced charges and that she told them she was an adult. She also the players had treated her “with utter respect” and should be left alone.
The Daily Telegraph says Dehar was one of 18 girls questioned by police after a raid last week on the Café Zaman, a nightclub on the Champs Elysee. Police said she has cooperated and doesn’t face criminal charges.
A scandal ripping through the World Cup worsened on Monday when the French coach said some of his rebellious players may not want to play their final group game against hosts South Africa on Tuesday.
The Gallic soap opera contrasted with some of the best action of the World Cup so far.

Their boycott of training on Sunday after striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home for insulting coach Raymond Domenech has horrified the French government and people. The players have been pilloried as overpaid brats.
The crisis took a new turn when Domenech told a news conference it was possible some of the players would not want to play South Africa in Bloemfontein when both teams face elimination unless they secure a high scoring victory.
President Nicolas Sarkozy has asked his sports minister to visit Les Bleus’ camp in Knysna.
The police probe into a suspected prostitution ring at a Paris nightspot has cast serious doubt as to whether France soccer players Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema will be named to the team’s World Cup squad.
Ribery has already testified, and Benzema is set to be questioned over alleged sexual relations with an underage prostitute operating out of a trendy Paris club.
With France coach Raymond Domenech set to name his squad in about three weeks, the sex scandal could not have come at a worse time for the beleaguered team. It follows a difficult qualifying campaign, during which Ribery was one of the rare players to shine.
