How to care for 100 year old oak flooring?
I live in a craftsman style home built in 1911 with quartersawn oak floors. They look like they need care (color lightening in traffic areas and they look a little dry in spots) but I don’t know what I should apply to them to spruce them up. They do not have a modern clear coat, they look open like they might have been waxed or oiled in the past.
The color lightening as you describe is probably due to sun exposure. Many hardwood floors are photo-sensitive. People are often surprised when they pull up area rugs or move furniture and notice what looks like “tan lines” on their flooring.
Have a professional come out and inspect. From the sounds of it, your floors were probably oiled. You can get oil and reapply, but it may be best to have a nice sanding done to get consistency, especially for the color changes. Look into products such as Waterlox if you want to stay with oil.
For cleaning and maintaining your wood flooring, try Bona. Most flooring professionals recommend Bona for cleaning hardwood floors and not Pine Sol or Murphy’s Oil.
