French farmhouse sinks came into being shortly after the first ceramic Belfast and Butler sinks were being manufactured at the end of the 19th century. Emile and Andre Porcher, two French brothers with a factory in northern France, used local clay to make their sinks. The clay used here was of a superior quality to the rough red Staffordshire clay that was commonly used at the Potteries, and allowed the French manufacturers to create a more refined product. Some designs dating from the end of the 19th century are still produced today, a testament to their good design. Enjoying the reputation as one of the oldest and most respected names in fireclay sink manufacture, the Porcher name continues to this day in the Loire region of France.
To give it an authentic vintage look, the Normandy Double Bowl Sink has stamped on its side the manufacturer’s logo. Able to accommodate a 60mm basket strainer wastes, the farmhouse sink comes in a non-tarnish brass or Satin chrome finish. Another option is to have a plug and chain, but in this situation the chainstay needs to be drilled into the worksurface.
