Creative Decorating In A Small Space
There are tricks that can make a room appear larger than it is. This is helpful in a small space. The way furniture and storage are used, as well as how a space is organized create a look of roominess where none exists.
If one is lucky, a small home or apartment will come with a dining area. Those that have nooks or no dining area at all, can create one. Try adding a low table and cushions to sit on, or use a bar counter and wooden bar stools for a dining room that does not creep over into other areas of a home.
In bathrooms, shelving can be added to store bathroom items if there is no under sink cabinet or medicine cabinet. It can also serve double duty as a shelf for towels. In some cases, if storage is not an issue, extra shelves can be removed, opening up the bathroom even more.
Decorators know how to make a place look larger by using light paint colors. They also keep the paint one color from the bottom to the top, using the solid colors as a way of enlarging a room. Dark colors are great when a space is roomier, but it closes in the walls, which s not useful in a small space.
Multipurpose furniture in the confines of a small space should serve more than one purpose. Coffee tables made of glass keep a space looking open, while a table with storage can hold little extras. The foot of a bed, can use an ottoman that contains some storage. This can be used to hold extra linens, clothing, and footwear. Pattern use should be minimized, as they overtake a room and furniture should be streamlined. Clean lines make a small room feel polished. Giant sofas and heavy drapes will make a room feel cluttered and messy. Use a futon or armless sofa and keep windows breezy, by using light, flowing curtains.
In bedrooms, the smallest bed possible should be used. If a desk cannot fit, but is needed, a loft bed with desk works well. This creates somewhere to play computer games, finish homework, or just complete work at home.
With the use of wood bar stools, storage, and the right accessories, there is no reason a small home or apartment cannot convey the same feel as a larger one does. In fact, having to work within the confines of a tinier area, forces one to be more creative and usually results in a better looking space.
