Paintings By Rembrandt
A value of $3,100 was set by the auction house as they saw what appeared to be a 17th century Rembrandt knockoff. Aware of what he was doing was the British buyer that agreed to pay 1,500 times more than that. In an English auction house the Rembrandt Laughing which experts have confirmed was a self portrait done by the Dutch master, depicted with his head tilted back in easygoing laughter, was bought for a bargain price of four and a half million. You will find that further information on photographs to paintings is on that site.
According to one of the collectors who specializes in Dutch and Flemish masters it could have easily amounted to about $30 or $40 million and he was surprised that it did not make as much at the auction. An art expert from Sotheby’s, declined to put a new value on the painting. It is not every day that a work of Rembrandt comes on the market and so this sale in particular is a rare opportunity.
In his hometown of Leiden was where Rembrandt painted the self portrait and he was in his early 20s then in 1628. This was when he was starting to earn his reputation as an artist and he began experimenting with expressions by using a mirror and his face. You could say that it has an unbelievable presence. The light has the most natural quality of light you can think of and I love the naturalness of the laughing.
About 100 years was how long the painting had been in the possession of an English family. Some had assumed it to be by one of Rembrandt’s students or a Rembrandt imitator. When it comes to the low evaluation given by the auction house, to blame are poor photographs that may have shown little of the painting’s luminosity or depth. Everything from the brush strokes to the contour, materials, and monogram in the little work points to Rembrandt and a 23 page analysis was created in full support of this. This site teaches you about pictures to painting.
Suspecting that the painting was a genuine Rembrandt from the monogram RHL, the winner of the auction may have been familiar with the rare style the artist used lasting for about a year. The monogram was short for Rembrandt Harmenszoon of Leiden. For its assessment the auction house recorded the signature HL. Considering the brush stroke used by Rembrandt and how his initials were always painted onto the background these serve to be more compelling proof.
It was the body shape of the laughing Rembrandt that perplexed the experts. When it comes to the piece, there was a woolly blanket for clothing, the metal armor and glossy shirt appeared amorphous, it lay in lumpy folds, and there was little description of the anatomy underneath. Yet the contour has a character of its own, one that is repeated in some of his later works. This contour possessed a certain autonomy and it has been said that Rembrandt may have been experimenting with this way of painting the body.
Similar to that of the other Rembrandt paintings, the thin copper plate on which the piece is painted matches the size and type. Considering this painting, it is similar to other works by Rembrandt as shown by the xrays because of the second painting underneath. People could not give an exact location for the painting before 1800 and there was a time when a Flemish engraver attributed the original to the Dutch painter Frans Hals after making a reproductive print as he did not recognize that the face in the picture was Rembrandt’s. People were searching for the painting again after the silence that followed.
