The in-depth Importance and advantages of breast milk
All associations recommend breast-feeding as the preferred method of feeding during the first year of life. However, some contraindications exist for breast-feeding such as infants with galactosemia, mothers infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, mothers actively using illegal drugs, such as cocaine or PCP or mothers receiving radio-active elements of cancer chemotherapy.
The assistance of a lactation consultant can often make a difference in the success of breast-feeding, as well as offer positive reinforcement and encouragement to the mother. Mothers who receive support from several sources such as lactation consultant, social worker or neonatal nutritionist, produce more milk and have longer duration of breast-feeding. Breast pumps are used to express breast milk when the infant is not able to feed on the breast. (premature infants, infants requiring tube feedings or those too ill to feed on breast). Mothers should be encouraged to drink plenty of fluid while lactating and breastfeeding or express their milk every 2-3 hours, especially during the first 3 months to maintain prolactin levels and adequate milk supply, Since the infant stimulates the release of the hormones prolactin (which makes the milk) and oxytocin (which releases the milk into the milk pools) from the pituitary by suckling, the more the infant nurses, the more milk is produced. Several factors may effect breast milk supply, these include, frequency of breast-feeding, sleep and exercise patterns, medications, fluid intake and tactile stimulation. Most breastfed infants will have at least 6 wet diapers in a 24 hour period and may have a stool after almost every feeding. It is more uncommon for a normal healthy breasfed infant to have 1 or more stools in one day. After 2 weeks of life, the breastfed infant should have a weight check to ensure adequate milk intake and growth.
ADVANTAGES
Breast-feeding offers unique advantages over formula feeding which should be communicated to new mothers in the hospital by house staff, nurses and primary physicians. Some of the advantages to breast-feeding are:
• Provision of immunologic and enzymatic components. Breast helps to keep your baby healthy by giving it natural immunity to viruses and bacterial infections. The early milk called “colostrums” is especially rich in certain nutrients and infection-fighting substances.
• Optimal nutrient composition
• Promotes maternal-infant bonding
• Promotes facial/muscular development
• Decreased incidence of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections
• Possible reduced incidence of chronic disease later in life
• Inexpensive and convenient
• Easy for infant to digest
• Breast milk is superior infant food- it contains all the necessary nutrients in the right proportions for the ideal growth and development of infant.
• Breastfed babies have fewer infections, allergies and episodes of diarrhea during the first year of life.
• Breast milk is sterile, easy to digest, and always served at the perfect temperature.
• Breast-feeding promotes jaw, teeth and speech development, and enhances baby’s brain growth.
• Breast-feeding reduces the risk of obesity.
• Breast-feeding provided early visual and physical contact, and enhances critical early bonding of baby and parent that lasts a lifetime.
Why then should a healthy mother switch to other alternative breast milk supplements when all these advantages are there for he baby?
