Do you think it’s OK to build a telescope out of a makeup mirror and plastic junk and stuff?
Would I be able to see Orion’s Galaxy and meteorites and stuff with it?
Well as an exercise in how to make a simple reflecting telescope, sure. But in practical usage, it’s a waste of time. Cosmetic mirrors have two major flaws when it comes using them for astronomical telescopes.
1) The mirror coating is on the back side of the glass. This causes a double reflection which is impossible to focus out.
2) The curvature of the mirror is far from being close to prefect. An astronomical quality mirror mirror requires all the light to focus to a point with no abberations (imperfections) in the glass. Usual tolerances are within 1/4 wave length of light. Cosmetic mirrors are closer to 100′s of wave lengths in tolerance.
A way to test how good a mirror is, use a device called a “Foucault” or Knife Edge Tester”
