How do I identify the style of my 1940′s mahogany dining room set?
The 4 table legs are very thick and ornately carved and scrolled ending in stacked orbs/balls. The highboy and buffet have similar legs. The whole set is probably veneered. It was probably made between the 1920 -1940′s.
The legs and most importantly the feet tell you the period (and hence style) of an antique table.
From your description it sounds like what is called a ball and claw leg. Chippendale used this design frequently in the early 20th century, but then again, loads of people did. If it is ball and claw then it is probably more like 1920′s however, you would need to take it to a dealer to get a definitive answer.
