Want to paint Mahogany windows and skirting white…?
My new house (fairly new build) has Mahogany window frames & sills, and skirting boards & door frames etc, but I think i would like them white. A lot of new houses that I have been in have white wood work which looks amazing, but they have had white PVC windows…. Because my windows are wooden framed (double glazed) I dont know how they would look painted white, and I am scared to start incase it doesnt look right!! Does anyone have any tips on how to paint them? Also the outside of the windows have to remain Mahogany coloured to fit in with the estate… would it look out of place from the inside??? Confused 
Ok so looked at answers so far….. re-thinking what i want… so not going to do windows… but what if i spent the time getting the door frames and the skirting boards painted white professionally, would that be too much of a contrast with the windows?? My fire place is white and the floors are real oak so the mahogany coloured woodwork is just annoying me personally!!
Once wood has been stained or varnished it ought not be painted with gloss etc. afterwards. This is because the stain/varnish will have soaked into the wood further than you will rub down and stop the primer for your other paint adhering properly. Varnish/stain is also a lot more rigid and your white paint will be prone to chipping. Have you seen a white painted staircase with brown chips. The white glosses etc. will never really take.
If you insist then minimise the chance of chipping etc. by thoroughly rubbing down the mahogany finish. There are a lot of specialist primers out there, but none ideal for this situation. I would put a coat or two of Sikkens Onol as a primer undercoat and finish with a Sikkens Satura or Rubbol depending if you want a Satin or Gloss finish (Satin will look better). You could use Dulux, but you don’t want cheap paint and the Sikkens Onol will hold back some of the resins in your mahogany wood. You will not get Sikkens in Band Q or Homebase, but only some Decorator Merchants like Brewers. Do not use Zsinnser or other shellac based primers as they are too rigid for the wood. If you insist on priming use a waterbased primer like prime-it plus which is a little more flexible.
EDIT – just doing the skirting is a much more sensible idea, you don’t need a professional, just rub them down extremely well and comprehensively and use quality paint. Two undercoats as a cushion against knocks. And a straight painted line against the floor – use masking tape.
