Mahogany Breakfront

Mahogany Breakfront
How do I strip an antique cabinet?

I have the top of a mahogany breakfront that was painted white by its original owner. The cabinet is >100 yrs old and has been devalued due to the paint. It has 3 dooors with beveled glass panes, and I need to strip the paint without damaging the glass or the cabinet. I have some experience with refinishing furniture and would like to do this myself, but I have never refinished an antique piece. I would greatly appreciate any information. I can furnish pictures of this piece as well.

Consider Soy Gel stripper. It is industrial strength, but odor free, safe to use inside, has a low evaporation rate and is safe to use on almost any surface except plastic, PVC or rubber. It costs a bit more, but in my opinion is well worth it.
Additionally, if the paint is lead based, the gel traps the lead particles preventing it from becoming airborne.

I would use steel wool rather than a chisel or putty knife to remove the striper and paint so as to avoid gouging the wood.
