I need huge amount of random books…?
Hello!
I’m helping out with a set design for a theatre space. I need a large amount of random books but they can’t look modern. So the leather bound sort of look is perfect. Though it doesn’t have to be real leather. If it’s old and torn that is brilliant, just as long as it has that old library feel.
Does anyone know where I can find a large amount from – and as cheap as possible?
It’s only to get a vintage look for a bookcase but I’m finding it hard to source.

Is this a short term project? You might consider renting from a local used book store, if they’ll do that, though of course if any books get damaged, you’ll end up buying them. Make very sure, if you rent, that the rental terms are clear and set out on paper, and that you discreetly mark or list all the books so they get back to their rightful owner. If you live in a place with any film production, there will probably be a place that rents books. Look in your phone book under “movies’ or “film production”, looking for any place that mentions props or set dressing, though many of them don’t put ads in phone books because they only deal with professional production companies and never the general public, Try your local thrift stores. You’ll have to pick and choose but you should find something. Check around and see who runs the local annual book sale. Most places have one, and they may have some old stuff kicking around. Put a notice in your local freecycle if you have one, asking for stuff like this. Some people might be delighted to find a way to get rid of grandpa’s collection of old law books or encyclopedias. It’s almost impossible to sell things like that these days. Heck, put ads up at a supermarket notice board, you never know what might turn up. Ask your local library if they have anything they were planning to get rid of. And don’t forget that you can make many relatively modern hardcover books look old by spraying them lightly with dark spray paint and scuffing them up a bit.
