Where can I find a steam-iron table for removing warping from paper artwork?
My brother called them steam tables, but all I can find on the web is either food prep table or clothes ironing tables, not artwork steam tables. In college, he had used a special ironing table they had for removing wrinkles/warping from pen-and-ink art pieces as large as 27×40″. He’d place the paper on the surface, close the lid over it and come back in half an hour or so to a perfectly smooth, dry, flat piece of paper. What are they really called and where would I find one?
i believe you are looking for a dry mount press or a dry mounting press. its main purpose is to attach photographs to backing boards. it works by making a “sandwich” of
1) backing board (mat board, illustration board, etc.)
2) heat sensitive dry mounting tissue (basically a sheet of paper that melts when heated
3) photograph.
But, for your purposes, it would be great for smoothing paper, providing that you run some tests on scraps of paper to determine the proper temperature and time.
as a cheaper alternative, the starving art student might use a regular clothes iron. on a junky table, put down a piece of clean mat or illustration board to protect both the table & your paper. making sure there’s no water in the iron, set it on low heat or possibly perma press. without pressing hard, start at the middle and work out to the edges. it would be better to move with curved arcs rather than straight back and forth lines. again, practice on large scraps of similar papers …………… Good luck! …………….
