Horse racing question?
I bet 20 on a horse 1-9. The thing is I got 20 back in return why did i not win 10 cent from the dollar? Why do people even bet on a horse 1-9 to win if you dont win a single cent back? I saw this happen hours ago with a horse Gio Ponti went off 1-9 had about 145,00 on him to win all the other horses had like 3,000 top. So why would some one bet 100 on a horse 1-9 just to win there same 100 back? I understand betting favorites 1-1 at least you can double but why bet 1-9?

Breakage is the downward rounding of the odds on the tote board that occurs at every track in the United States. In certain situations it can have a significant impact on the effective takeout rate you get at the track and thus can hurt your overall profits. The amount can fluctuate wildly in a parimutuel pool and there’s no way to know or predict what the effect of breakage will be when the windows close. Instead, bettors just need to realize that on any given wager, breakage will reduce their expected payout by a maximum of 19 cents and a minimum of 0 cents. On average, over the course of many bets, one would expect that breakage would reduce a bettors overall payout by 9.5 cents.
