How to I flip from upside down to on top of a tree branch?
Some trees, I find myself hanging like a koala horizontal under a tree branch. How do I flip myself on top of the branch?
I fell out of a tree, and a stick went through my arm one time. One life to live, though, right? Go big, die happy? Most important thing: safety. Think of yourself like a criminal that doesn’t want to go back to jail. Plan. Clear the sticks and rocks on the ground out of the way first. Get a mat. Get a spotter (described below). Wear a helmet, and you’ll feel a lot better. When you go out to practice (described below), practice falling down from all conceivable angles, first. You don’t want to feel surprised when you’re falling. You want to feel comfortable all the way through the fall, until you stand up and walk away. Nobody looks cool laying on the ground with a broken back. Remember that before you start practicing the trick itself. Remember that you don’t want to look stupid because you didn’t practice falling down.
So, you basically want to get the best back-swing you can. You might take two pumps. Have a spotter and a pad and try it low, first. You can. Don’t be a dummy and say you can’t. They have low bars for kids at every playground, and you can definitely go on a short walk and find a playground.
If you get a good back swing, your next step is to use your arms, then your abs. You’re going to basically pull your arms from straight above your head (not behind your head) to your knees. Try to pull your stomach in as hard as possible and grab your shins.
The second MOST IMPORTANT step is the brakes. Make sure your spotter understands that it’s difficult to stop, so you don’t fall unexpectedly onto your face. The key here is to simply sit up straight as you reach your final position. If you stay tucked, you’re going to over-rotate. If you’re not slowing down fast enough, put your hands up. Your reflex will be to grab onto the branch. That’s what your knees are for, though. Put your hands up, not down, if you think you are going to over-rotate. Trust me. It’s a simple merry-go-round principal. The less tucked, the slower the spin.
P.S. – If you fall, you’ll almost definitely fall face-first because you didn’t remember to put your arms up. You’ll fall face-first and intentionally rotate to your side, if you’re smart because you’ll be falling straight down. If you don’t think you can do a side break fall without putting your arms in the proper position, don’t try. Everybody always breaks their arms, wrists, shoulders, or collar bones when they fall to their sides.
