The Arrival of Contemporary Furniture
Contemporary furniture design, a term used for a conglomerate of furniture styles during the past thirty years, has borrowed from many periods. Over the years, however, it has developed character, and this year there was evidence that contemporary styling had finally come into its own-important news for designers in the home-furnishing market. One aspect was seen in the clean, architectural lines of many of the cabinets, chests, and storage items, designed on a modular system and resulting in emphatic vertical lines which enable the pieces to be used in series of two or more. This furniture is stripped of unnecessary decoration, with the natural graining of plain woods and burls supplying embellishment.

In styling, the year was significant for its return to simplicity, characterized by a combination of early American and Scandinavian furniture, designed to produce an informal effect. More formal decorations showed a preference for seventeenth-century styling, principally with furniture of Spanish or English derivation. Simplicity was also prevalent in hand-woven fabrics, in herringbone ‘brick’ converted from vinyl tile, and in the revived interest in growing plants. For establishing backgrounds appropriate for early American contemporary furniture, pecky cypress and wormy chestnut were often used for sheathing walls.
Modern metal contemporary furniture was used out-of-doors increasingly in the treatment of gardens, terraces, and balconies as open-air rooms. Bold seventeenth-century Spanish styling was seen in the furniture reproduced from authentic pieces, such as that from the Spanish Trading Center, A. Scarselli, and di Lucca. Designs by Edna Rymal Cox were of more modern character. Flexible multipurpose furniture included cocktail tables that rose to seat eight persons for dining, tables that can be folded and put against the wall as narrow consoles, and benches which can be placed under coffee tables. A bed by the Moore Co., actually a bunk-bed accommodating two sleepers, can be folded up and concealed behind draperies or louvers in a niche.

Other space-saving, multipurpose contemporary furniture included items by Reilly-Wolff, such as shelf-table and double chair combinations in walnut and aluminum, and benches with seat cushions or walnut-slat tops. Multipurpose wall units, incorporating desk, dressing table, and chest-of-drawers, were designed by Kent-Coffey, who also featured wall-hung bed headboards, night stands, and dressers. Peter Gorian presented a suspended Capri swinging chair from Italy, made of hand-woven rush in the shape of a basket and utilizing foam rubber cushions. Office furniture made of wood and metal and designed in the furniture style was offered by ODI, Kasparian, and Richard Draper. Other noteworthy modern designs from Denmark were made available by Frederick Lunning, George Tannier, and Thonet.
