Cookie jars have been available since 1929 at the time of the Great Depression. These were produced from glass with screw-on lids that were made of metal. After that stoneware became well-liked in the 1930′s, and a company in Ohio produced the first ceramic cookie jars. Subsequently from the late 1930′s just about all jars were made out of ceramic.
Before long, instead of just getting embossed on the front of the container, manufacturers started employing figures of well-known characters. These were also made to resemble fruit, vegetables or even animals. You might say that cookie jars had a golden era of popularity, between 1940 to 1970. The old kinds are considered collector’s items.
