Creating Your Ideal Bedroom

Bedrooms have always predominantly been used as a place to sleep, however this particular room of the house is now being used as a place to unwind, relax and escape. When looking at the required style and use of your bedroom, colours are as good a place as any to start. The romantic reds and pinks can be saved for soft furnishings such as curtains and bedding. Candles also give a lovely glow to any room…remembering, of course, to blow them out before going to sleep!
Obviously the room lighting is important as it shouldn’t be too bright but at the same time not to dim either, so plenty of soft lighting is the best compromise. Traditionally to achieve the best effect in a room for reading in you should look towards the softer shades of ivory, amber and slate blue. If you are trying to achieve a sanctuary effect when remodelling the master bedroom, then soft pillows, luxurious throws, landscape paintings and mirrors will promote private reflection.
I know from experience that lying or sitting on the bed to read will inevitably lead to me falling asleep within about 10 minutes, therefore a comfortable chair with a small table and reading light is a good addition. Many therapists believe that designating a place for a particular function is a good way to organise your behaviour. We are generally programmed to believe that a bed is for sleeping, by designating an average of 8 hours of sleeping in our bed you are telling your body it is now time to sleep and recharge those batteries. By spending additional time in or on your bed, the boundaries of sleep and being awake are confused which can lead to sleeping at the wrong times of day and not sleeping when you should or need to (the dreaded insomnia).
When looking at homes bedrooms have always been somewhat underrated against the ever important kitchen and bathroom. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. With so many design options and such beautiful furniture available, this one-time sleeping room could soon be the relaxing getaway you need. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to achieve and, unlike a holiday, your personal getaway won’t involve a great deal of travelling to get there. With the right touches your bedroom may also be just what you needed to put a little romance back into your life.
