Find a Place for Everything
If your closet could use some work, you’ve come to the right place. Most people struggle with categorizing things well enough to really get organized. First you have to figure out what categories everything will go in or you won’t know what kind of storage or closet space you’ll need. Use these tips from the pros to get your closet organized without having to hire a professional or spend a lot of money.
1) First you have to figure out how many categories you’ll need. Divide up everything that is to go into the closet. The easiest way to start is to empty the closet and spread out what you have. Use the dresser tops, the bed, the floor, boxes, laundry baskets, whatever you need. Start to pile things together that you think might go in the same category. Start with large categories, like “shoes”, “coats”, “shirts”, and “pants”. We will narrow these down in the next step.
2) As you’re going through, try to determine what you have too many of. Use garbage bags or boxes to separate what you might like to sell, give away, or donate to a charitable organization. For instance, you may notice that you have ten coats and that you really only wear about two of them. Go ahead and give them away if you can. This one step will make more room in your closet and open up more options for when you’re ready to organize.
3) Now you can narrow down the categories and make them more specific. Your “shoe” category might be divided into “his and hers” piles, and then further categorized by casual, dress, high heel, work, boots, and cleats. Even if you don’t plan on using separate containers or shelves for every little thing, go ahead and divide them so that you can get an idea of what kind of space or what type of organizer might suit you best. You may want a shelf for regular shoes and boots, but an over-the-door hanging bag for dress shoes that are easily scuffed.
4) Go through all of your piles and figure out how much space each thing will take up. Save space by using specialty hangers that are designed for ties, belts, purses, and lingerie. <a href=”http://www.onlyhangers.com”title=”Clothes Hangers”>Clothes hangers</a> that cascade items are really handy for saving space. Wooden hangers or cedar clothing hangers are perfect for heavier items, such as suits and coats.
