Connection between the # sign and China’s modern word for ‘well’?
We have the pound sign on our phones…. #.
China’s modern day symbol for well (as in water well)… is basically this: # only not as rigid.
Was the pound symbol used on phones with the knowledge that it may be referencing to the mentioned Chinese ideogram?
This might be a dumb question… and it’s extremely unlikely that anyone might know the answer to this.
I’m just bored, curios, and careless with my asking points.
Even if you don’t know, your thoughts and comments are continually appreciated.
*curioUs.
I had misspelled it.
I don’t believe there is any connection between the two, it looks like the number sign evolved from the printing of lbs.
The Chinese character for well, 井 (jing3) appears to have evolved on it’s own. I can’t seem to find it in any of my Chinese dictionaries at the moment, but I am pretty certain that the two symbols evolved without each other’s influence.
I’ll ask one of my teachers tomorrow if I can use one of their computer programs that gives histories for the Chinese character so I can get it’s etymology.
