If Space Is A Problem, Try These Tips
Growing families always run into the same problem: as the family grows, the available space in the home seems to shrink. If that reminds you of your circumstances, there are some simple things you can do to maximize the space that you have.
Let’s start with the kitchen, because it is truly the heart of the family home. You may not be able to afford to buy a brand new kitchen, but you may not need to, either. There are many things you can do to get extra space in your kitchen.
Go into your kitchen and remove absolutely everything from every drawer and cupboard. Then turn around and put them back. However, as you’re doing that, think about where to put them. Have you ever noticed how much dead space there is between the plates and bowls you keep in a cupboard and the next shelf up? Those shelves are usually adjustable, but because you’ve only got one adjustable shelf, that all you’ve ever used. Measure the length of that one shelf and go out and buy another one. You have just doubled the amount of space you have in one cupboard.
You’ll get even more space if you get rid of all those kitchen items you never use. Don’t spare anything. Old rice cookers often find their way into a cupboard only to sit there taking up space because they didn’t prove to be very useful as the family grew. If you have one of these, give it to your local charity organization. It will be very useful to somebody.
If you’ve been ruthless and eliminated everything you don’t need, you will find that you’ve got plenty of space in your kitchen. Now you can update it with some modern appliances that you will use, like a Sanyo rice cooker. When you’re done with the job, you will feel like you have a brand new kitchen.
Sometimes children’s bedrooms can reduce us almost to despair. Short of moving to a bigger house, how can you make a growing child’s room grow with them? About the only thing you can do is make them clean up their room once in awhile. However, there is one thing you can do. Get a twin loft bed for each of the kids. They love them and the bed adds an enormous amount of usable floor space to the room.
When you’re trying to find space in any room, two principles will apply. First, think about the volume of space in the room, not just the square feet. Secondly, think about the things you never use and get rid of them. Keep these things in mind and you can effectively double the size of your home!
