How to Select and Buy Church Pews
Whether for a Protestant, Evangelical, Catholic, or liturgical church, there are certain features of a pew bench you should research to find the most optimal furniture for the comfort of a variety of congregates.
Researching many aspects of the pew body is one of the first steps. Consider your seat options when purchasing church furniture – options may include high resiliency (HR) foam, spring seating, and individual seating. Individual seating options provide easy cleaning and replacement. Ergonomic options, such as the depth and curvature of the pew seat may determine if attendees are able to sit comfortably for longer periods of time.
It’s equally important to consider different back options for your pew bodies. Consider the different methods of construction: all-wood pews, an upholstered seat with wood back, or an upholstered seat with tapered or two-piece cushion back. All-wood pews are easy to maintain, and can provide a traditional atmosphere. Upholstered seating provides superior comfort and flexibility and a two-piece cushion back will provide greater ergonomic support. High-back pew benches can offer safety, comfort and modesty screening, especially for balcony seating.
When specifying pew bench cushions, pay attention to the upholstery fabric. You should review color, print and actual fabric swatches, paying attention to comfort, ease of maintenance and design. Another design aspect to consider is the finish of your church furniture. Different wood finishes and a custom stain color might be necessary to match your already existing interior design.
Pew ends are a decorative, yet functional aspect of church furnishings that should not be overlooked. From a functionality perspective, pew ends with features like armrests allow for privacy and additional comfort. However, open-ended pews (often called “endless”) may provide easier and faster access for an especially crowded service. Weigh certain options such as the size of the congregation, the general needs of attendees and your desired budget before choosing the design of your pew ends.

1. Bookracks – How large are your worship books? Choose your design based on width or height, and ease of accessibility.
2. Card, cup or pencil holders – If your congregation has need for storing donation envelopes, pencils and cups in your pews, consider these accessories in your planning.
