Americans Turn to Alternative Medicine like Ayurveda for Chronic Health Problems
A large percentage of Americans no longer seem to turn to western medicine for cures for many chronic disorders and illnesses. With a number of alternative medicines now available, over 38% of Americans are now turning to Ayurveda a source of treatment. This traditional form of East Indian medicine offers solutions for some chronic illnesses or disorders.
One fifth of American hospitals have found the need for alternative medicine to be given alongside conventional medicine. With 38% of Americans now continuing some form of alternative medicine, even medical schools have started to embrace these therapies.
Statics from a U.S. health officials report indicate that Americans spent $33.9 billlion on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in 2007. Cam includes medicine and medical practices that are not part of conventional medicine. This includes herbal supplements acupuncture, meditation, and chiropractic therapies. As per a teleconference in July 2009, Dr. Josephine P. Briggs, director of the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, these statistics show that Americans are willing to spend a lot of money on CAM products, practitioner visits, and are even willing to spend on classes and materials. This obviously goes to show that alternative medicine offers pain relief and is able to contribute to the health and well-being of everyone, Americans included. Briggs went on to add that the purpose of the survey was to determine areas of CAM that warrants research by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The survey disregarded the fact whether any of complementary or alternative approaches actually worked.
