fender stratocaster making annoying noises?
Hi, I have a Fender lite ash stratocaster and i’ve had it for around a year now. recently whilst playing it i have noticed that when i go higher than the 12th fret (mainly on the low e-string and a little on the a-string) i get this annoying noise which pretty much deadens the note. I have highered and lowered the action, i have altered the pick-ups and I have even altered the trust rod, but none of this has helped me at all and was wondering if anyone could help please? thank you.

First, I want to second Dana’s opinion of your problem. He is generally right on with his answers. He knows his stuff. This sounds like a high fret. What I use for a straight edge to check the frets is a neck plate (like on the back side of your guitar). That is just the right size to cover 3 frets at a time at the lower part of the neck. Lay the straight edge so that it covers 3 frets only. If it rocks, the middle fret is high. If it does not rock, move to the next fret and check those frets. Move down the neck checking at every fret. You will probably find a high fret somewhere below the 12th fret.
The truss rod only adjusts the relief of the neck, that is the forward curvature of the neck (as you view it from the side). It will not affect a problem below the 12th fret. If you want to check your neck’s relief here is how. Put a capo on at the first fret. Depress the E string at the 12th fret. Then measure the distance between the bottom of the string and the top of the 6th fret. That should be 0.009 for a Strat. Feeler gauges (like you use in car repair) works well for this. If the distance is correct, you truss rod is set all right. If the distance is greater than that, you need to turn your truss rod clockwise (as you look down the neck from the headstock). Work in small increments, like 1/4 of a rotation at a time.
One other thought, you might have a dead string. How long since you changed your strings? They don’t last forever.
